Overview

Play therapy is a way of helping children cope with difficult life events. Play is used as the medium of communications because it is the way children make sense of their world. It is the play of the children heard by a sensitive therapist and the relationship of trust and care between the two, which can help children manage their lives. In this training, attendees will learn the history of play therapy, why play therapy is a successful approach to helping children meet emotional challenges, how to demonstrate multicultural competence in the play therapy space, how to apply evidence-based play therapy approaches, and how to become a registered play therapist.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the history of play therapy: when it was first used and a definition;
  2. Share why play therapy works: natural mode of communication, brain development, and be able to list diagnoses it is effective for;
  3. Demonstrate Cultural Competence in the play therapy space – list what characteristics describe a cultural competent therapist and
    creating a inclusive environment;
  4. List 3 play therapy approaches – Child-Centered, Filial and Theraplay and the differences and similarities between the 3;
  5. Differentiate between non-directive, directive and combined play therapy approaches including techniques of each approach,
  6. Practice and apply a directive play therapy intervention – using a provided directive clay activity;
  7. List steps necessary to become a registered play therapist – including professional licenses required, education requirements, hours
    of play therapy specific instruction required, direct client hours required, and necessary supervision hours and supervisor
    requirements.
