Overview

This course is for clinicians exploring whether to work with couples, as well as those who currently see couples but are feeling challenged by the complex issues presented by their clients. For newer therapists, this course will help prepare them for the choices and decisions they should make when deciding to see couples clinically. For those who see couples already, the course will explore the common issues that couples bring into a therapist’s office to help clinicians be better prepared for complex and challenging cases. The second part of this course will cover the four typical issues that couples bring to therapy: loss of connection/lack of communication, sexual roadblocks, infidelity & other betrayal and polyamory/CNM– as well as give further resources for training and education.

Learning Objectives

Research shows that the highest rate of dissatisfaction with therapy is in the field of couples therapy. There are many reasons for this, but a lack of preparation and in-depth study of couples therapy in graduate training programs is part of the problem. The objective of this course is to help participants to be more effective in their work with couples, to understand the need for training and to receive an overview of the common issues for which couples seek therapy.
